I don’t know how many people would openly admit this but, on some level, everyone can relate to not being exactly where they want to be yet. Some are close or on the right track, while others are nowhere near where they thought they would be at whatever point they find themselves in their lives. One thing that I have learned as a speaker and a trainer is that as much as I would like to believe that things are so complex, the truth is, most people miss the mark because they don’t realize how to simplify their strategies.

I recently attended an event where a man came up to me and wanted to talk about his dreams and what he wanted to do with his life and why after all this time he still felt like he wasn’t any closer than he was ten years ago. As we were talking I realized that he was a good man but, like most people, he had talked about what he wanted but really hadn’t been following a specific plan. It reminded me of a video I had watched some time ago that talked about four steps to follow in any business that really helped me take my real estate business to new heights. The four steps were Potential, Action, Results and Beliefs.

Think about it this way - If you were only two miles from my house and I asked you to come over, but didn’t give you directions on how to get there, it doesn’t matter how much you want to come over. If you have never been there and don’t know where to turn it is going to take you a lot longer than it should have, if you ever even make it. I am reminded of my years in Sunday school learning about the Israelites spending forty years in the desert before finally reaching the promised land, when if they knew how to get where they were going it should have only taken about four days!

This is comparable to how most people run their businesses.

This is such a simple question yet it can have such profound results. Last week I wrote an article called “Watch Your Mouth” that I received a lot of emails, facebook messages and tweets about. The majority of the messages were very positive and some of you were very honest. In fact, one person wrote me and said, “I completely get the power that our words and thoughts have on our emotions, and in turn on our production level, but I just can’t seem to figure out how to stay consistent with being intentional with my thoughts and words no matter how hard I try.” Can anyone relate to this? She went on to say that, “I will make it a point to stop and, as you put it, take every thought captive, but then once my day gets going all that goes out the window and I just start reacting, thinking and talking like I always have. This unfortunately leads me to the same emotional states that I have always been in and I just can’t seem to break the pattern! HELP!!”

If you ask the average person how they feel they can give you an answer but not too many can tell jared-flat2-sm

you how they got there. Some people believe that they feel a certain way because of whatever the weather happens to be outside or because they “woke up on the wrong side of the bed”. When you consider that so much of what we do or don’t do comes from these feelings, also known as emotions, that is a dangerous reality for most sales people. The reality that you don’t know how to better manage something that can have such a profound effect on what you accomplish and how productive you are for a given day.

I am a huge believer that emotions are one of, if not the most powerful force in our lives that have the ability to move us closer to or hold us back from our daily potentials.
